The darkest stargazing spots in Taiwan, from the Hehuanshan Dark Sky Park to the Longpan coast in Kenting. Each spot lists a dark-sky quality estimate, the Milky Way core's visibility window, tonight's conditions, and access and season notes to plan your next stargazing or astrophotography trip.
Wuling (Hehuanshan) — Nantou · Hehuanshan · Elevation 3275m · Bortle 2 · The highest point on Taiwan's road network (3,275 m) and the heart of the Hehuanshan International Dark Sky Park. Thin, clean air and very low light pollution make the overhead Milky Way naked-eye visible — the most accessible high-alpine site on the island.
Yanfeng — Nantou · Hehuanshan · Elevation 2750m · Bortle 2 · The official stargazing deck of the Hehuanshan Dark Sky Park, with a dedicated observing car park. At ~2,750 m with an open southern view, it's a favourite for Milky Way arch and star-trail photography.
Kunyang — Nantou · Hehuanshan · Elevation 3070m · Bortle 2 · A large car park at ~3,070 m, one of the roomiest observing spots in the Hehuanshan area. North for Polaris star-trails, south for the rising Milky Way — good for large groups and long exposures.
Tataka — Chiayi · Yushan · Elevation 2610m · Bortle 2 · The western gateway to Yushan National Park at ~2,610 m — the darkest belt along the New Central Cross-Island Highway. Far from city lights with a clean southern sky; the Milky Way framed over the Yushan range is the signature shot.
Dasyueshan — Taichung · Dasyueshan · Elevation 2600m · Bortle 3 · The Dasyueshan National Forest Recreation Area at ~2,600 m — the closest high-alpine dark sky to Taichung city. Forest-ringed with a high chance of a cloud sea, ideal for a two-day trip combining sunrise, cloud sea and night sky.
Xiangyang (South Cross-Island) — Taitung · South Cross-Island · Elevation 2320m · Bortle 2 · Around the Xiangyang Forest Recreation Area on the Taitung side of the South Cross-Island Highway (~2,320 m), ringed by no towns — one of eastern Taiwan's purest dark skies. Facing south toward the Central Range, the rising Milky Way has almost no ground glow.
Longpan Park — Pingtung · Kenting · Elevation 50m · Bortle 3 · A coastal grassland on the eastern edge of Kenting National Park; the southern sky over the Pacific is almost light-pollution-free. One of the few places in Taiwan to catch the Southern Cross and Carina low on the horizon, and a superb foreground for the Milky Way over the sea.
Alishan — Chiayi · Alishan · Elevation 2488m · Bortle 3 · The Alishan National Forest Recreation Area at ~2,488 m — Taiwan's most famous sunrise-cloud-sea-stargazing trio. The 360° Ogasawara viewing deck lets you line up an evening cloud sea, a midnight Milky Way and a dawn sunrise in one visit.
Lulin — Chiayi · Yushan · Elevation 2862m · Bortle 2 · Home to the Lulin Observatory at ~2,862 m — one of the anchors of professional astronomy in Taiwan. Extremely clean air and very low light pollution, just above Tataka, with the Milky Way and deep-sky objects sharp to the naked eye.
Dayuling — Hualien · Central Cross-Island · Elevation 2565m · Bortle 2 · A high mountain saddle where the Central Cross-Island Highway meets Highway 14A (~2,565 m) — a dark-sky gateway between the Hehuanshan massif and Taroko, drive-up with open views, easily combined with a Hehuanshan trip.
Taipingshan — Yilan · Taipingshan · Elevation 1950m · Bortle 3 · The Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area at ~1,950 m — the most accessible high-alpine dark sky in northern Taiwan, ringed by cloud seas and cypress forest, ideal for a two-day trip from Taipei or Yilan.
Lanyu (Orchid Island) — Taitung · Orchid Island · Elevation 100m · Bortle 3 · A Pacific island with few people and sparse street lighting — a rare low-light-pollution island sky off mainland Taiwan. Many roadside pullouts face the sea for the Milky Way arching over the ocean.
Qimei, Penghu — Penghu · Qimei · Elevation 40m · Bortle 3 · The southernmost of the Penghu islands, far from Magong's glow, with open coastal grassland. In summer the Milky Way rises from the southern sea horizon — a quiet island astrophotography spot.
Dongju, Matsu — Lienchiang · Matsu · Elevation 40m · Bortle 3 · An outer island of the Matsu archipelago with very low light pollution — famed for spring 'blue tears' but also excellent for stars and the Milky Way. The Dongju lighthouse area has open views for sea-and-sky night scenes.
Bortle class and SQM are estimates for well-known sites, used to compare darkness — not on-site measurements.
