Okinawa · Ishigaki Island
Bortle 3 · Rural dark sky | Elevation 182m | SQM ~21.5 | Best view South
One of Japan’s best low-latitude bases for attempting the Southern Cross. Official Okinawa tourism notes that 84 of the 88 modern constellations are visible from Ishigaki, along with the Milky Way and guided night tours.
🌌 Tonight the Milky Way core climbs to a shootable altitude around 21:03, sinks back near 03:43, and peaks around 23:33 at roughly 37° in the South.
New Ishigaki Airport and Ishigaki Port make access straightforward. For the Southern Cross, choose a beach or viewpoint with a clean southern horizon.
Plenty of lodging, car rental and night tours; leave the main town lights for better darkness.
The Southern Cross is possible roughly Dec–Jun but needs a clear low horizon; the Milky Way is strongest from summer into early autumn.

Bortle class and SQM are estimates for well-known sites, used to compare darkness — not on-site measurements.
